The 2nd annual bike ride to the Thousand Islands!!

We rode from Binghamton NY up to the Thousand Islands, finishing at the North Country Welcome Center, 190 miles in total. We have a few support vehicles and created 20 mile segments where the vehicles will stop so riders can refuel and even if wanted, take a break for a segment. This was our 2nd year for the ride and its main purpose is for Alex’s Lemonade stand, which is a non for profit raising funds for childhood cancer research. September is a big month for the foundation, they created a campaign called “The Million Mile”.

Each September to bring awareness and raise funds teams are formed, individuals set goals for themselves to walk, run or bike miles and donate dollars to raise. The car company Volvo, will match donations often a weekend or 2 in the month, so we try to plan the ride to line up with the match.

September 14, 2024

We started at 5:30am, in the dark, but the goal is to be able to finish with some light. It's honestly such a fun and fast day.

9 Bikers in all this year, 5 of them rode all 170 miles!! I logged 75miles

This group, Team Maddie, formed through Triathlon to bring awareness to Maddie Shaw who was diagnosed with Metastatic Ewing's Sarcoma Cancer at 9 years old in 2013. She battled strong for 6 years before sadly passing in 2019. The team continues, carrying on her name, her fight and the impact she made on all those she touched. She also worked with and benefited from programs through Alex's Lemonade Stand, so it’s a foundation that her parents, Amy and Kevin are strong supporters of. I’ll get more into the story of the team in other posts.

9 Bikers in all this year, 5 of them rode all 170 miles!! I logged 75miles and helped support those riding the rest.

Throughout the day, updates on how far we are are posted on Facebook through the Team Maddie page. This year, we raised almost $14,000 in 48 hours which then gets doubled by Volvo!

The next day, we spent the day up on the river and Shaw's “Cottage Carey”. We don’t get to just hang out much, most of our gatherings involve an actual event, so it makes the weekend extra special having time to just catch up and enjoy each other.

We spent a few hours on the boat and a nice impromptu jump in the river during. It's the weekend I’ll look forward to every year! We bring some much needed awareness to Alex’s lemonade stand and raise some big time money for the cause. One of the bet 48 hours of the year with a mix of hard work and relaxation with an amazing group of people!
